About product

Eduard 1:48 Tempest Mk. V upgrade set - photo-etched accessory set

A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Eduard intended for refining a plastic model of the Hawker Tempest Mk. V fighter in 1:48 scale. The set replaces the parts that cannot be made thin enough in injection-molded plastic - the instrument panel and side consoles of the cockpit, the seat restraint belts, grilles, covers and small sheet-metal details of the airframe. The package holds a photo-etched fret, not an aircraft model; the base kit has to be bought separately.

The real subject

The Hawker Tempest Mk. V was a British fighter of the end of the Second World War, derived from the Typhoon design but given a new wing with a thinner profile and the Napier Sabre H-block engine. It stood out for its speed at low altitude, was heavily armed with cannon and made its mark both chasing fast targets and attacking ground targets. The cockpit with its good view and characteristic canopy shape is one of the features the photo-etched set brings out most.

Building and painting tips

Nip the photo-etched parts out with a scalpel on a hard base. The plastic originals the photo-etch replaces have to be sanded away first - otherwise the set will not seat. Make the bends in a bender or between two blades so that the edge is crisp. Color-printed parts are not sprayed over; the rest of the photo-etch is best degreased and primed with a metal primer before painting. It is bonded with thin super glue applied in a minimal amount, ideally with a wire. Fit and paint the cockpit details before the fuselage is closed.

Who the set is for

  • builders of British fighters of the Second World War in 1:48 scale
  • modelers for whom the plastic cockpit details of the base kit are not enough
  • anyone interested in models with the canopy open, where the interior is visible
  • more advanced modelers with experience of photo-etch and bending metal

The set is supplied unassembled. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a photo-etched accessory added to a plastic Tempest Mk. V kit in 1:48 scale. The kit has to be bought separately.

Working with photo-etch calls for calm, a sharp scalpel and tweezers. It is not the ideal choice for a first model, but anyone who has built one photo-etched set already will manage it without trouble.

As a rule yes. The plastic details the photo-etch replaces have to be sanded away, otherwise the new part would not seat level.

With thin super glue in a minimal amount. Cement for plastic does not hold on metal.
