This set belongs among the smallest accessories used with military models. It is not a kit — these are separate castings of hand grenades in 1:48 scale, to be hung on the gear of figures, laid out in a vehicle interior or placed in a box within a scene. It is exactly details like these that move a diorama from a mere model to a believable scene, because the viewer's eye looks for them where it expects them.
In the Second World War and in the Korean conflict the American army used several types of hand grenade, which differed from each other in shape as well as in purpose: a fragmentation type with a grooved cast-iron body, a smooth impact type, cylindrical smoke grenades and signal versions. What matters to the modeler is above all the shape and the way they were carried — grenades were routinely hooked by the safety lever onto the straps of the gear or onto breast pockets, or carried in boxes and canvas bags. The color distinction between the individual types was laid down by regulation, so even a single correctly painted detail can anchor a scene in time and nationality.
The castings are very small, so cut them off with a sharp scalpel over a cutting mat, preferably in an enclosed space so that a part does not get lost. Wash the parts before painting and spray on a thin coat of base. On the grooved body the texture stands out if a dark wash is applied over the base color and the excess wiped off, or if the edges are lightly brought out with a dry brush. Hanging them on the gear of a figure is most reliable with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin. In 1:48 scale there is no point in dealing with lettering; the right shade and a clean shape are enough for credibility.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
