The extra from the Czech manufacturer Special Hobby portrays a tow bar of the kind used in ground and deck handling of the machines of the US Navy. The set in 1:48 scale is created for completing a scene around a finished model; neither an aircraft nor figures are in the package, and it is purely a piece of ground equipment that will give a scene authenticity.
On the decks of aircraft carriers and at coastal bases alike, aircraft were towed with the help of tugs and tractors, to which a machine was connected by a bar hooked onto the landing gear. Tow bars belonged to the everyday color of deck operations; they lay about by the island, hung on the tractors and were constantly in action during moves of the machines. It is precisely small things like these that set a static display-case build apart from a living scene in which the bustle of a flight deck can be felt.
The bar comes into its own excellently with a parked machine, laid beside the landing gear, connected to the aircraft or in the hands of a figure of deck personnel. Verify the coloring on photographs of the chosen period and unit; after the base coat add scuffs, rust and greasy traces, so that the extra fits in among the other equipment. In combination with a tractor a compact mini diorama comes about that will catch the eye even without a large area.
