A masking set from the Czech maker Eduard for a model of the de Havilland Vampire in the FB.5 and FB.9 versions in 1:48 scale. The self-adhesive masks are pre-cut to shape, are applied to the model and, after spraying, leave sharply defined areas. It is not a kit but an accessory for a build.
The Vampire was one of the first British jet aircraft put into service. You will recognize it by the short fuselage nacelle and the two booms carrying the tail surfaces. The FB.5 version was the fighter-bomber variant for the support of ground units, and the FB.9 derived from it and was adapted for service in the tropics. On both of them the cabin is shaped into a rounded canopy which, for all its simplicity, is hard to mask by hand, because tape creases on a doubly curved surface.
A pre-cut mask solves this problem, because it is cut exactly to the unrolled shape. Apply it in the middle and smooth it out from the center to the edges with your thumb or a toothpick, so that it does not ripple anywhere. Fill any remaining area with a strip of tape. Degrease the model before spraying and apply the paint in thin layers, so that no ridge forms under the edge. Take the masks off with tweezers soon after drying and with a diagonal pull. If paint does get under the edge after all, a pointed scraper or a thin brush will put it right.
