This injection-molded plastic kit captures the Weserflug P.1003/1 project, that is, a machine with tilting rotors on the wingtips. It is important to say right at the start that the subject is not a production aircraft but a design study that stayed on paper and was never built. The model is meant to be glued together and painted and belongs to the category of so-called project aircraft.
The P.1003/1 was a study of the first half of the 1940s that looked for a way to combine vertical takeoff with the speed of a conventional aircraft. The solution lay in a pair of large rotors placed on the wing, which turned upward for takeoff and tilted into the position of tractor propellers in horizontal flight. It is therefore an early variant of a principle that only made its mark in aviation decades later with modern tiltrotors. The project never got past the drawing board, so every rendering of the machine is based on the surviving design drawings. For a collector that is precisely the main attraction: the model shows a technical idea that cannot otherwise be looked at.
The seating of the nacelles and the rotors is the key, so try them dry first and watch the symmetry of the two sides; asymmetrical rotors are immediately visible on a finished model. Finish the cockpit before joining the fuselage and mask the glazing. Spray the base with an airbrush, and on a project machine you can even choose your own take on the camouflage, because no period photographs exist. Pick out the panel lines with a thin wash, apply the decals onto gloss varnish and then even the surface out with matte or semi-matte varnish. Keep the weathering restrained, as exaggerated wear looks unconvincing on a machine that was never built.
