About product

MH models 1:48 Z-37A Cmelak - front ring with cooling gills

A resin accessory for a model of the Z-37A Cmelak in 1:48 scale. It replaces the front part of the engine cowling including the adjustable cooling gills in a form that matches the machines used in Czechoslovakia. According to the manufacturer these are corrected parts, that is a correction of the shape against the parts from the plastic kit. It is not a kit of an airplane but a detail accessory to a base model.

The real subject

The Z-37 Cmelak was a Czechoslovak single-engine agricultural aircraft intended for crop spraying and for spreading fertilizer. It was powered by an air-cooled radial engine, and that is exactly why the front of the cowling carried adjustable cooling gills with which the pilot controlled the flow of cooling air - on an aircraft that spends most of its time at low altitude and low speed that was an important feature. The Z-37A version was the most widespread production form of the type. A robust fuselage, a fixed landing gear and the unmistakable shape of the cabin have made the Cmelak one of the most popular subjects of Czechoslovak aircraft modeling.

Building and painting tips

First wash the casting in lukewarm water with detergent, so that the mold release agent disappears; without that a primer will not take hold. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw and level the mating surface by sanding on paper laid on a flat board. Sand with breathing protection, ideally wet. Cut off the corresponding part of the kit and clean up the opening so that the ring seats square with the fuselage - check that dry and looking from the front. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; the gel version gives more time for alignment. Apply a primer before painting. The gills are a small divided surface that is best brought out by a dark wash running between the vanes; the inside of the ring tends to be darker than the external finish, so spray it before you glue the part to the fuselage.

Who the set is for

  • builders of civil and agricultural aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • modelers building machines of Czechoslovak origin
  • anyone interested in a correction of shape against the parts from a kit
  • more experienced builders used to working with resin

This is an accessory set, not a stand-alone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The front part of the engine cowling including the adjustable cooling gills. According to the manufacturer these are corrected parts, that is a correction of the shape against the kit.

It is not. It is a resin accessory to a Z-37A Cmelak model in 1:48 scale, and the kit itself has to be bought separately.

Clean up the opening in the fuselage and try the ring dry, looking from the front, until it is square. Only then glue it with cyanoacrylate glue, ideally the gel version.

After the base coat a dark wash running between the vanes helps. Spray the inside of the ring in a darker shade before you glue it to the fuselage.
