The highest grade of masking in 1:48 for the last production form of the Tomcat, including the small windows and the inner faces of the canopy.
Responsibility details are not available.
The D form rid the Tomcat of its greatest weakness, the unreliable original powerplant. The new engines gave the pilot thrust he could maneuver with without watching the throttle, and they shortened the takeoff run along the deck. Under the nose came a twin fairing with a tracking and infrared system, which is recognizable on a model at once.
The cockpit was given digital instruments and the machine later mastered precision bombing with laser guidance. It left service with the US Navy in 2006, when its tasks were taken over by smaller and less expensive fighter-bombers.
The expert grade does not stop at the canopy and the wheels. It adds the small windows, the position lights and the reverse of the glazed parts, so the frames look right even when you look into an open cockpit from outside.
The variable-sweep wing moved automatically according to the speed of flight and the pilot only intervened in exceptional cases. On a model the position chosen is therefore usually the one matching the chosen situation, whether that is parking on the deck or a low-level pass.
The large hinged canopy of the Tomcat is best masked away from the model and fitted to the fuselage only after the camouflage has been sprayed and has dried. The frame on this type has a pronounced step where paint likes to gather, so spray it in thin coats.
