A set of parts for building the heavy cruiser Atago, the form matching 1944, size 1:700, Japanese maker Fujimi. A sister ship of the cruiser Takao.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Atago was one of the four units of her class and Fujimi has rendered her in the form from the autumn operation of 1944. A model in 1:700 scale works well as an escort for larger vessels, but it holds its own on its own as well. The exact composition of the package is described by the manufacturer; what follows here rests on the information given in the name.
The cruiser served as the flagship of the force that sailed toward the Philippine islands in the autumn of 1944. On the way through the passage off the island of Palawan a salvo of torpedoes from an American submarine hit the ship and the vessel sank fairly quickly. The commander of the force transferred to another unit and the operation continued. In design she was a ship with a tall, heavy forward superstructure, guns of 20.3 cm caliber and strong torpedo armament, that is a typical representative of the Japanese cruiser school of the 1930s.
The sides of the superstructure are made up of several panels, on which it is good to check the fit dry in advance. The smaller barrels and the torpedo tubes last better if you attach them after the base coat. It works well to let the model stand overnight before applying a matte varnish, so that the edges of previously glued small parts do not lift.
This is an unassembled set with no finish applied. Order glue, paints and other supplies separately, unless stated otherwise.
