A plastic model of the Japanese fast battleship Haruna in 1:700 scale in the full-hull version, that is including the underwater part. The finished model measures about thirty-two centimeters in length.

The Haruna belonged to the Kongo class. She was built before the First World War as a battlecruiser, but two interwar rebuilds gave her stronger armor, a new powerplant and a tall superstructure, so she entered the Second World War rated as a fast battleship. She carried eight guns of 35.6 cm caliber in four twin turrets. Thanks to her speed she suited escorting aircraft carriers and was one of the hardest-worked capital units of the Japanese fleet.
The name gives the full-hull version, so the model is built including the underwater part and not only down to the waterline. On the finished ship the shape of the bottom, the propellers and the rudder are visible, which will be appreciated by anyone who builds a ship as a technical model rather than as a scene on the water. A stand suits it for display. In 1:700 scale the length of the finished model comes out at roughly thirty-two centimeters, because after her rebuilds the subject measured over two hundred and twenty meters.
With a full-hull version, start by joining the two halves of the bottom and sand the seam in the side of the hull carefully, otherwise it will show on the finished ship. Only then fit the deck, the superstructure, the turrets and the boats. Separate the thin masts and barrels with a sharp blade and sand the remaining material down. On large ships the underwater part was painted differently from the side above the waterline, so mark the dividing line with masking tape before spraying.
