The closing part of the decal collection for the Aichi D3A1 Val in 1:48 size. Three aircraft from the Chinese theater of 1940 and from the Japanese home islands, that is from the time before the war in the Pacific broke out.
Responsibility details are not available.
Before the Aichi D3A1 type appeared over Hawaii, it already had a year of active service behind it. That took place over southern China, where Japanese aviation supported ground operations from bases at Nanning and Hankow. It was an experience that gave the crews routine in dive attacks on small ground targets, and it paid off for them a year and a half later.
The sheet offers an aircraft of the 14th unit from Nanning airfield in March 1940 and a machine of the 12th unit from Hankow airfield in June of the same year. The third scheme belongs to an aircraft from the deck of the ship Akagi as it looked in April 1941 over the Japanese islands. Together they give a view of the type in the period when it was gathering experience and did not yet carry the wartime wear of the later years.
Prewar and early wartime Japanese aircraft tended to have lighter finishes and more carefully applied markings than machines from the end of the war. A model built from this part of the series therefore looks clean, almost ceremonial, and will sit well in a display case that already holds a worn machine from the late phase of the fighting. The fuselage numbers differ with every scheme, so the sheets can be combined.
A dry surface will refuse to take a marking and wrinkles will form. It is therefore a good idea to moisten the area first and let the motif float onto it, and only then to settle it with a soft brush.
Only the sheet of markings is part of the delivery.
