The Petlyakov Pe-2 was a Soviet twin-engined bomber of the Second World War, known to its crews by the nickname Peshka. It came about as a fast machine that could defend itself against attack by its speed, and it was used from the beginning of the fighting on the Eastern Front right to the end of it, in dive and level bombing and in reconnaissance. It had a retractable landing gear, with the main wheels hidden in the engine nacelles and a small wheel at the rear. It is precisely the wheels that are conspicuous on a finished model: they stand at the viewer's eye level and their shape gives away the quality of a build sooner than anything else.
This is a replacement for the wheels from a plastic kit in 1:48 scale. The wheels are fitted in place of the parts from the kit the set belongs to, and the particular kit is stated in the enclosed instructions.
Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the rest so that the circumference of the wheel stays regular. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, and choose the glue according to their material. Before you glue the wheels on, try standing the model dry and check that it stands on all its wheels and that the main wheels meet the surface at the same angle. Do not paint the tire completely black, as a dark gray shade looks truer in scale; set the hub apart separately and bring out the transition between it and the tire with a dark wash. If the wheel has a flat spot from the weight of the machine suggested on it, that belongs down toward the ground.
For modelers who build the Pe-2 in 1:48 scale and want to stand a model on truer wheels. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
