A printed sheet with the German lozenge camouflage pattern in the five-color version for the lower surfaces of a model in 1:32 scale. Besides the pattern itself it also holds the tapes with which the places over the ribs of the wing were covered on the real aircraft. The artwork is not rendered as fresh factory paint: the shades are muted, the texture of the fabric is visible across the surface and there is a slight irregularity of the overprint.
Lozenge is a pattern of polygonal fields which at the close of the First World War was printed directly onto the covering fabric of German aircraft. It replaced the lengthy spraying of camouflage and broke up the outline of the machine at a distance. The lower surfaces were given a lighter set of shades than the upper ones, so that the aircraft would stand out less against the sky. Over the finished covering, narrow strips of fabric were still glued over the ribs, so a regular system of vertical stripes arose on the wing, which is very visible on a model.
Prepare the base smooth and glossy; on matte paint a silvery veil arises under the decal. Cut the sheet into strips so that they follow on from the seams of the covering, and rather with a small overlap. Leave the piece in lukewarm water only until it can be moved, transfer it to a dampened place and press the water out with a soft cloth from the center outward. Adhesion into the details is helped by softener. Glue the tapes over the ribs only onto the dried pattern and measure them out by the spacing of the ribs on the model. Once dry, varnish the surface over.
