About product

The CSS Palmetto State in 1:350 scale

A model of an ironclad of the Confederate Navy from the time of the American Civil War. The 1:350 scale is an established one for ships, so the model fits into an ordinary display case and alongside other vessels of the same size.

The real subject

The Palmetto State belonged to the casemate ironclads, that is, to ships with a low hull and a sloping armored superstructure, from which the guns fired through gun ports in the sides and at the front. She was built in Charleston and served in the defense of that port as well. She made her mark with a sortie against the blockading squadron off Charleston, where the Confederate ironclads took advantage of the fact that wooden ships could do nothing against armor. The period 1862 to 1865 given in the designation corresponds to the time of her service, at the end of which stood the evacuation of the port.

  • Suitable for a collection of early ironclads
  • Undemanding in size for a display case

Building and painting tips

First put the hull and the superstructure together dry and check whether the slope of the casemate walls fits, because it is precisely that which makes the silhouette of the ship. Cut excess material away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the surface down, then wash and degrease it before painting. Apply the paint in thin layers, as in a small scale a heavy layer floods both the surface of the armor and the edges of the gun ports. Iron armor looks better in a dark gray tone completed with rust in the places where water runs off than in pure black. If you set the model into a water surface, draw the waterline out before you seat the hull.

This is a kit, and the model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A kit of a model of a ship in 1:350 scale. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.

A ship with a low hull and a sloping armored superstructure. The guns fired from gun ports in its sides and at the front, and these vessels had no revolving turret.

The scale is 1:350, the same one in which modern warships are ordinarily built. The subject was small, so the finished model is among the smaller pieces in a display case.

For those interested in the American Civil War and in early ironclads. The hull and the superstructure are simple in shape, and the work concentrates on painting and on the surface of the armor.
