A kit of the casemate ironclad CSS Chicora in 1:350 scale. A ship of the Charleston squadron of the Confederacy, which served from 1862 until the port was evacuated in 1865.
Responsibility details are not available.
The CSS Chicora was a casemate ironclad of the navy of the Confederate States. She was built at Charleston and entered service in 1862. The sloped walls of the armored casemate protected the gun battery, and the bow was adapted as a ram for attacking the hulls of enemy ships. The ship belonged to the Charleston squadron, which defended the port against the blockade by the Union, and she remained in service until the city was evacuated at the beginning of 1865, when her own crew scuttled her. The years in the name correspond to the period of her active service.
1:350 is among the most popular scales for ships: the model stays compact and yet it carries fine detail. The low freeboard and the long casemate give the real subject a characteristic flat silhouette, so it pays to watch over the level seating of the casemate on the hull and the symmetry of the gun ports.
Wash and degrease the parts before gluing. Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down with fine sandpaper, so that you do not damage the edges. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts and go through the specific procedure in the manufacturer instructions. Dark shades with restrained edge highlighting suit the armored surfaces, and a warmer tone suits the wooden deck. A thin wash will draw out the raised relief and the rivets, while overdone grime will swamp a small scale.
The kit will please collectors of ships of the American Civil War as well as modelers who build in 1:350 scale and want something other than modern warships in the display case. It will also serve as the basis of a small water scene on a board. Paints and glue are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
