A set of cut painting masks for the lettering and insignia of the most famous anniversary P-38J. In the package there are two sheets of thin masking tape, which is semi-transparent, shapes well into curves and leaves no traces after peeling. The aircraft itself in this scale is obtained separately.
When the five-thousandth Lightning built came off the Californian production line in 1944, it was given an overall deep red finish instead of the usual camouflage and a giant jocular inscription on the lower surfaces of the wing. The machine toured a number of plants and air bases as a reminder of series production in full swing and to this day it is among the most photographed twin-boom aircraft of the Second World War.
Large light lettering on a deep red is the hardest discipline for a decal: the carrier film gives itself away on a glossy finish, a strong softener can undercut the pigment and the sheet breaks over rows of rivets. The sprayed variant has a sharp edge, it follows the texture of the surface and it will take later weathering and a final varnish. If the first attempt does not come off, the area can be oversprayed and the masking repeated, which is not possible with a decal.
