Masks for the temporary winter white finish of the British and American V/STOL Harriers in 1:48 scale. Two sheets for an overspray over the factory camouflage.
Responsibility details are not available.
Snowbound northern Europe forced the British squadrons to spray their machines white right in the field. The set of masks reproduces this temporary pattern for the Harrier GR.1, GR.3 and for the AV-8A of the US Marine Corps, on which it appeared only exceptionally.
With V/STOL aircraft the winter camouflage was applied in a washable finish directly over the factory green-gray pattern, which stayed underneath and showed through in places. Exercises in Norway, where British and American units regularly headed, made these schemes one of the most photogenic sights of the whole Cold War. The finish was washed off after the return, so no machine carried it for long and surviving pictures are not numerous. All the greater is their value for a modeler looking for an unhackneyed variant.
First the base camouflage is finished; only then are the masks of the white overspray laid on. The tape can be put away after unmasking and used a second time, provided its backing does not tear off. Spray the white more sparsely and let the darker layer show through slightly underneath. The result then looks like field work with a brush, not like a factory finish, which corresponds exactly to the subject.
