Responsibility details are not available.
One sheet of pre-cut shapes for spraying the two-color pattern on the upper surfaces of the Spitfire. The carrier is a thin masking tape: it settles onto the rounded cowling and the leading edges as well, once finished it comes away without residue and with gentle removal it lasts for several uses. The semi-transparency of the material matters here, because by the engraving on the wing you can tell where a shape belongs before you press it down.
British fighters carried a two-color pattern on the upper surfaces in two renditions, which were mirror images of each other. They were assigned according to the production number of the machine, so aircraft with the pattern turned the opposite way stood side by side at one airfield. Anyone who traces the outline freehand or from a plan usually ends up with their own guess; here you get a boundary derived from the period subject, and that on all four quadrants at once.
Begin with the lighter of the two shades and let it cure longer than seems necessary. Lay the shapes from the middle toward the edges and press the perimeter down carefully, as otherwise paint will run under. Apply the second shade in several light layers and aim at right angles to the edge, not at a slant. The sharp transition that arises from this can be softened by a final light overspray.
