The castings of the late production variant of the small Soviet fighter, 1:48 scale. The package carries plastic only; nothing else is enclosed with it.

The twenty-fourth production variant closes the development line of the stout Soviet fighter. It was given an engine of the M-63 series with considerably higher power, a strengthened wing skin and a stiffer frame, because the older examples had begun to show cracks in violent maneuvers. A tailwheel was added in place of a simple skid, and some of the machines carried rails for 82 mm unguided rockets under the wing. The pilot still sat with no sliding canopy, only behind a low windscreen.
Its deployment began on the Mongolian border in 1939, continued with the Winter War in the north and peaked in the summer of 1941, when it made up a considerable part of the fighter strength. Against the newer opponents it no longer had the speed, but in a turning fight it was exceptionally agile and an experienced flyer could make use of that. A number of machines flew on until 1943.
What the buyer pays for here are the castings alone. None of what usually accompanies a complete issue, that is photo-etched components, covers for the glazing or markings, is in the wrapper, and the booklet with the procedure is missing too. A small airframe calls for careful work on the seams of the round fuselage, because every irregularity shows on a curved shape. In the large formats the plywood structure of the shell could be engraved and the layering of the finish imitated; in 1:48 the same service is done by fine accenting of the panels, a slightly worn wing leading edge at the root and a more matte shade on the moving surfaces. The clear windscreen in front of the pilot deserves to be polished until it is truly clear.
