The Pontiac Grand Prix with number 43, with which Richard Petty won at the Alabama oval in Talladega in 1983. A plastic kit in 1:24.

Talladega in Alabama measures 4.28 kilometers in one lap and its turns are banked at thirty-three degrees, that is more than any other circuit of the American oval series. It was exactly here that Richard Petty won in 1983 with a Pontiac Grand Prix and race number 43. On such a fast oval the racing goes practically without braking, and the result is decided by air drag and by the ability to hold on in a dense pack of machines running close behind one another.
Petty moved to Pontiac at the start of the 1980s and stayed with it in the seasons that followed. The Grand Prix body of that time has a markedly raked windshield and a short rear overhang, details that on a model give away the year of the subject at once.
The gloss will demand the most work. Cars for the fast ovals had no distracting add-ons, so all the attention falls on the smoothness of the surface and the cleanness of the transitions between colors. We recommend sanding the parting seams down before spraying the primer and working in thin coats with long enough pauses between them.
The interior of an oval special consists of a roll cage, one seat and bare sheet metal, so even a small inaccuracy in building it is visible through the open window. It pays to assemble the cage dry and fix it with glue only after checking the geometry.
The model will appeal above all to collectors who are putting together a parade of the cars of one driver or one era. The 1980s are rewarding in that respect: the bodies are simple in shape, but the color schemes were imaginative and every car could be told from the others at first glance.
