Printed mass balances for the ailerons and the elevator of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 for the large scale of 1:35. A couple of millimeters of a part that is immediately visible on a finished machine.

The control surfaces of a fast aircraft have an unpleasant habit: at a certain speed they begin to oscillate of their own accord and can tear a wing off. The phenomenon is called flutter and the simplest defense against it is mass balancing, that is a weight set ahead of the hinge line. On the Messerschmitt the designers solved it strikingly on the ailerons – the weights hang on short arms under the lower surface of the wing, where anyone who comes closer to the machine will see them. The elevator was balanced as well.
The balances also differed between the individual versions in shape and in the length of the arm, so they belong among the small things by which it can be told from a photograph which series a machine is.
It is precisely these small things that the set brings, printed on a 3D printer. The pieces measure only a few millimeters and a large scale pays off on them: the arm has the correct section, the weight keeps its teardrop tip and the transition between the two parts has a sharp edge. Injection-molded plastic usually only suggests such a shape, because it could not be drawn out of a mold.
1:35 is not usual with fighters, but with the Bf 109 it makes sense – kits of the G-6 and G-10 versions exist in it and accessories for them are gradually being added. The parts are released from the print frame with a thin saw or a new scalpel blade, the remnant of the support is sanded down and cyanoacrylate glue holds the joint. They will take acrylic as well as synthetic paint; it is just good to start with a thin primer: it holds on print resin considerably better than paint applied straight onto the surface.
