About product

When a turbine was put into a Convair

In the 1960s the piston Convairs were still in good condition; only their radial engines were no longer enough for the demands on reliability and maintenance. The solution was a conversion: British Rolls-Royce Dart turboprops went into the nacelles and the machine became the CV 640. The sister conversion of the smaller type was given the CV 600 designation. The aircraft thereby gained a second career, which with the freight versions lasted into the new millennium. They are easy to recognize – the nacelle is slimmer and longer and the propeller was given a different shape of blade.

The conversion on the model

The set brings the parts for this conversion and adds flaps in the position for landing to them. That means working in two places at once: the piston nacelles from the kit are removed and replaced by new ones, and the rear strip of the wing is cut away for the high-lift devices.

The most sensitive part is the seating of the engines. Both nacelles have to form the same angle with the axis of the fuselage, otherwise the finished model will look crooked despite otherwise perfect work. It helps to prepare a simple template from card and compare both sides against it while the glue sets. The propellers are fitted right at the end, so that they do not suffer during handling. The flaps are best added at the moment when the engines sit firmly and it is clear what the resulting silhouette looks like.

Converted Convairs are among the types that outlived their creators. While the piston machines were disappearing from scheduled routes as early as the 1960s, the turbine versions went on carrying cargo, mail and spare parts, and some of them lived to see the colorful schemes of courier firms. A model therefore need not stay with the airlines of the period.

Yes, a comparable modification of the smaller type carried the CV 600 designation.

The symmetrical seating of both nacelles. It pays to compare them against a simple template.
