The Turkish Air Force ranks among the largest operators of the F-16 in the world and, as one of few countries, built the machines at home. Licensed assembly got under way in 1987 as part of a program that moved the production line to the Turkish aviation industry, and hundreds of aircraft of the C and D versions in several production blocks came out of it. Some of them later went through an avionics upgrade, so machines almost forty years apart fly in a single fleet today.
That is exactly what makes the subject interesting for a builder. The markings changed over that time, the unit badges are colorful and several machines received striking commemorative or display finishes that differ from the standard gray at first glance. 1:48 offers material for a model that does not commonly appear in display cases, because most finished Vipers carry American or Western European markings.
The distinguishing feature is the national insignia itself. It consists of a red square with a white crescent and star, and on the vertical tail the national flag and the aircraft number are added to it. Lay this part of the sheet down with the greatest care, because the square has to sit parallel to the leading edge, or the whole model looks crooked.
The surface must be glossy. On matte paint, air is trapped under the decal and a white haze arises that cannot be removed. Cut the sheet as close around the motif as possible, so that a minimum of clear carrier is left. Use the setting solution in two steps, a weaker one to seat it and a stronger one only once it has dried, to form it into the engraving. Finally close the whole model with a matte or semi-gloss clear coat, which levels out the difference in sheen and hides the edges of the carrier.
