A plastic kit of the turboprop aircraft Basler BT-67 in polar fit-out, 1:72 scale. It is a deep modernization of a proven twin-engined transport machine for operating in icy regions.
Responsibility details are not available.
Few aircraft have as improbable a life story as the airframe the Basler BT-67 comes from. The Douglas DC-3 first flew in the middle of the thirties, and at a time when its contemporaries had long served out their lives, a new role was found for it. A firm in Wisconsin took old airframes, replaced the piston radial engines with Canadian turboprop powerplants of the PT6A range, lengthened the fuselage, strengthened the structure and fitted modern avionics. What arose was a machine with the look of an aircraft from the thirties and the abilities of a present-day one.
In icy regions the BT-67 is held in exceptional regard. It can land on an unprepared surface and on skis, carry a load to places with no airfield at all, and its structure bears extreme cold. It therefore flies for polar research programs at both poles, carries scientists, fuel and material to remote stations and has more than once taken part in rescue flights no other type could have made.
The kit in 1:72 scale gives the finished model a span of over forty centimeters, so the result is an impressive piece for a display case. The characteristic silhouette with slender turboprop nacelles and long propeller blades is recognizable from the original machine at first glance. The kit belongs in the category intended for more experienced modelers, where it pays to take care over cleaning up the parts and to keep trying the fit without glue.
