The real subject

The MiG-15UTI is the two-seat training version of the MiG-15 jet fighter. Instructor and pupil sit one behind the other under elongated glazing that consists of two separate parts, and it is exactly that which tells the trainer apart from the single-seat fighter at first glance. The type was built in large numbers, flew with a number of air forces and was produced in Czechoslovakia under license as the CS-102.

What the part is for

The replacement clear canopy in 1:72 scale takes the place of the part from the kit. You reach for it where the cockpit is meant to be visible and the original part is thick, clouded or scratched. The set is prepared for a closed as well as an open cockpit, so the model can be built with the interior exposed, with the equipment of both seats on show. The EDA abbreviation refers to the kit the canopy is shaped for, a product from Eduard; even so, try the fit dry before gluing.

Building and painting tips

Handle the part by its edges and on a clean surface, as fingerprints are harder to remove from a clear surface than from plastic. Cut the surplus material away with a sharp blade a little from the edge and level the edge by sanding on fine paper, trying the fit after every pass. Separate the two parts only once the whole thing sits down, so that they line up. Glue it with a product for clear parts or with white PVA glue, which dries clear; cyanoacrylate will fog the surface. Mask the frames with narrow strips of tape and spray the interior shade first and only then the top color.
