A flexible foam mask for the landing gear bays of a Seafire F.XVII model in 1:48 scale, intended for the Airfix kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Seafire is the carrier version of the Spitfire adapted for service on aircraft carriers. The F.XVII version was powered by the Rolls-Royce Griffon V12 engine and, compared with the earlier forms, it got landing gear with a longer stroke that would take harder landings on the deck. The landing gear bays are clearly visible from below on a finished model and are at the same time among the places that are most easily clogged with paint when the underside is sprayed.
It is a flexible foam insert shaped to fit the landing gear bay. It has no adhesive layer and holds by its own springiness, so it leaves no glue on the surface and does not catch on the fine lines inside the bay. Compared with ordinary tape it has the advantage wherever the space is intricate: it fills the whole of it at once instead of masking piece by piece. The set is intended for the model of the Seafire F.XVII in 1:48 scale from Airfix.
Finish and paint the bay first and only then press the foam in, before you spray the outer surfaces. Slide the insert in so that it fills the whole opening and no gap is left anywhere, but do not force it; it is enough that it holds by itself. Apply the paint in thin layers and away from any direction that would drive it under the edge of the insert. Once it has dried, take the insert out with tweezers, carefully and straight, so that it does not catch on fresh paint.
For modelers who are held up by masking bays with tape, and for anyone who wants the finished and painted inside of the bay to stay clean even after the underside has been sprayed. The model, the paints and the glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
