An imitation bolted joint with a hex head 1.7 mm in size. A dimension that is still held well in tweezers and is at the same time distinct on a model.
Responsibility details are not available.
Seventeen tenths of a millimeter is the boundary beyond which handling becomes noticeably simpler. The piece is still small, but tweezers will hold it without shooting it across the whole bench. Anyone who has ever hunted for a smaller size on a carpet knows why it is worth mentioning at all.
The surest way of carrying it leads through a stick with a drop of wax or through the tip of a brush moistened with water. The detail catches on it, travels to its place and adheres to the glue before it has time to fall. The tweezers are left for aligning, not for transport.
Seating has two phases and they are often confused. First the piece is only laid down and aligned to direction; only then is the joint loaded by a touch. Anyone who presses straight away squeezes the glue out of the seat and the joint then rests on a thin film around the circumference.
The reward is a joint that survives even the model moving to another shelf a year later. The difference between hardware that holds for years and hardware that falls off after the first move does not arise in the choice of size but in those few seconds over the seat. The order of work is worth attention too: the earlier the hardware is seated, the more chances it has to take a knock later, so it is usually left until the end of the build.
