A build that goes to an exhibition experiences more touches in a single day than in a whole year at home. It is carried by strangers' hands, set down on a strange table, turned for a photograph and in the evening travels back. Nineteen tenths of a millimeter is a dimension large enough for everyone to see, and therefore also large enough for somebody to knock against.
One principle helps: a model is never handed from hand to hand. It is set on a table and the second person lifts it themselves, by the base. Most of the damage to small hardware arises precisely at the moment when two people pass a build between them and each waits for the other to let go.
A shot taken in advance has one more advantage. When it turns out after the return that one head is missing, the photograph shows at once exactly where it sat and how it was turned. Without it that place is surprisingly hard to find, because an empty seat blends into its surroundings and the eye slides over it.
More experienced builders therefore carry a small box with what they used on the model and replenish it right after returning. The work takes a quarter of an hour, whereas a postponed repair often drags on for months and the model stands unfinished in the display case in the meantime.
