Imitation bolts with a hex head in the 1.3 to 2.0 mm size range. It is the coarser end of the same size family, that is parts for joints that are meant to be really visible on a model.
Heavier joints appear on real machinery where armor, a gearbox flange, the foot of a hanger or a tank lid is bolted. On a model these places act as a guide to scale: from the size of the head the eye estimates how big the whole machine is. It therefore pays to choose the dimension from the subject rather than from what happens to be at hand. Hold the part dry next to a neighboring detail, for instance next to a rivet or the edge of a hatch, and compare whether the size matches. An inconsistently large head lowers the impression of the whole model more reliably than a few missing joints.
A larger part is both easier to hold in tweezers and easier to seat, yet it still pays to drill a shallow recess to fix its position. It is glued with a minute drop of cyanoacrylate glue on the tip of a wire and the surplus has to be wiped off at once. With the bolder heads it works well to bring out the shadow with a dark shade in the gap under the head and to lighten the upper face carefully, thanks to which the part does not look like a flat sticker. Before painting, wash and degrease the whole surface; fingerprints last under paint longer than one would expect.
The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. The manufacturer gives the number of pieces and the split of sizes in the package.
