Nineteen tenths with a lowered crown

Coarse dimensions with a lowered head create a different impression on a model from their taller counterparts. They act rather like a pressed rivet or like a nut tightened home, whereas a full hemisphere is reminiscent of a decorative button. For machinery where it should be clear that a joint serves for work and not for show, the lowered shape is therefore usually the more suitable choice.

When the grade actually exists

The upper part of the scale is only partly covered in this family, which has a practical bearing on what to get. If you need a coarser size, it is better not to put it off, because the neighboring grades are not all made and there is no way to arrive at them otherwise. It is sensible to take the graded set for the upper part of the scale at the same time, because it also covers the sizes that are not available on their own.

Notes on the build

• Seat the head square; with lowered shapes a tilt is easier to spot.
• Clean up the hole so that the part seats over its whole face and no gap is left under it.
• Choose a rather flat paint; gloss emphasizes every unevenness of the crown.
• If you give the joint a patina, apply the wash to the rim, not to the top.
• Think of the back of the part too; glue that has soaked through tends to be clearly visible from the inside.
