A fastener with a hex head and a large washer in the 0.5 mm size. Half a millimeter is among the finest sizes offered, and it is precisely the washer that is the reason even a part this small is visible on a model.

When the smallest dimension makes sense

The smaller the scale, the sooner a detail starts to look coarse. On a model where the joint is to be noticeable but is not to draw attention to itself, a half-millimeter part is exactly the thing: covers, sheet-metal parts, small brackets, the mounting of mirrors or footpegs. The large washer gives it an outline that a smaller part normally does not have, so the joint is not lost even after painting.

How to make the work easier

• Turn on a direct light from the side, so that the part casts a shadow and is visible on the surface.
• Work over a light area with a rim; a part of this size that falls is usually gone for good.
• Use the moistened tip of a toothpick to pick it up; tweezers often fire a small part away.
• Drill square and shallow; a deep hole swallows the part together with the washer.
• Meter the glue with a wire into the hole; a drop on the surface floods the part.
