About product

Admiral Hipper 1940 1:700 — an Artwox Model wooden deck

A pre-cut natural veneer with a self-adhesive back and with the printed pattern of the gaps between the planks, cut for the deck areas of a heavy cruiser model in 1:700 scale. It replaces the molded plastic relief with real wood and so gives a model the contrast of materials that is hard to imitate by painting. The year in the name determines which configuration of the real ship the cut relates to. The set is intended for the Trumpeter 05775 kit.

The real subject

The Admiral Hipper was the lead ship of the class of the same name of German heavy cruisers, taken into service in 1939. She carried main armament of 203 mm guns in four twin turrets and was designed for operations on the open sea, which the high freeboard and the large hull matched. The form of the ship was adjusted over the course of the war, particularly as regards the anti-aircraft armament and the superstructures, so the early and the late versions differ from one another.

Application tips

If you are adding photo-etched railings to a model, think the order through. Glue the veneer on before the railings and other fine equipment: on a clear deck the work is comfortable, whereas between finished stanchions the veneer bends and breaks. Conversely, pre-drill any posts and legs that are to pass through the deck before laying, so that you do not then drill through freshly glued wood. When an opening has to be made afterwards, fit the drill into a hand tool and turn it slowly; fast drilling frays the veneer. Finally secure the area with a matte varnish and only then glue the photo-etched parts on with super glue.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of German cruisers in 1:700 scale
  • Builders who combine a veneer deck with photo-etched accessories
  • Those who want a faithful surface without painting the planks by hand
  • Anyone interested in display models with a balanced level of detail

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model. The kit, glue, paints and photo-etched parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The deck first. On a clear area the veneer lays easily, whereas between finished railing stanchions it bends and breaks. Add the railings only after the protective varnish has dried.

With a drill in a hand tool and at slow speed, with the plastic supported from below. Fast drilling frays the edge. Ideally, though, pre-drill the openings before laying the veneer.

The arrangement of the superstructures and the armament changed on this ship during the war. The year says which form of the real ship the set is cut for, so that the parts sit on the matching version of the model.
