1:700 DKM Bismarck 1941 Wooden Deck w/Masking Sheet & Photoetch for Trumpeter 05711

A combined set for the model 1:700 DKM Bismarck 1941

The package brings together accessories for the Trumpeter kit of the battleship Bismarck in her 1941 version in 1:700 scale. According to the name these are a veneer deck with a self-adhesive backing, a masking sheet and photo-etched parts. The set is cut for the Trumpeter 05711 kit, and the model itself is not part of it.

Laying the veneer around the superstructures

The deck of a large battleship is not one continuous area. The veneer part therefore goes around the bases of the turrets, the superstructures, the hatches and the winches, and it is precisely these places that decide whether the result looks like a deck or like glued-on paper. Work in sections: peel the protective film off only at the edge of the part, seat the edge along the longest straight line and only then release the film further. Around every cut-out press the veneer down with a blunt tool so that it sits even into the corner. Never pull on a loose end, as veneer is thin and will tear.

Trimming and refining

Remove the overhangs with a new, truly sharp blade led perpendicular to the surface, with minimal pressure and rather in two passes. A blunt knife does not cut the grain of the wood cleanly and the edge is then left frayed. Small gaps at the superstructures can be leveled at the end with a thin strip of the leftover veneer, or darkened during the weathering so that they blend with the gaps between the planks. Fit the photo-etched parts at the very end of the build.
