About product

Bismarck 1941 veneer deck, 1:700 scale, Artwox Model

An accessory to a plastic kit, not the kit itself. A thin wooden veneer with the printed laying of the deck planks is cut to the shapes of the decks of the Dragon 7125 kit and has a self-adhesive layer on the back. The dating in the name refers to the particular state of the ship on 26 and 27 May 1941, which the target kit matches as well.

The real subject

The Bismarck was the lead unit of the class of the same name of German battleships, brought into service in 1940. The main armament consisted of eight 380 mm guns in four twin turrets, and the propulsion was provided by turbines with high-pressure boilers. In design she came out of the German interwar school, with a balanced combination of hull armor and extensive deck protection. The ship made a single operational sortie into the Atlantic and was sunk on 27 May 1941.

Gluing tips and protecting the veneer

A wooden deck is sensitive to damp and to chemicals. If you weather the model once it is finished, apply a thin matte varnish first as an insulating layer; otherwise a thinned wash will soak into the veneer and the area will darken unevenly. The gluing itself: sand the engraving on the plastic, degrease with alcohol, lay it on dry, pull the film off in sections and work from the longitudinal axis. The transition from the wood to the steel areas is evened out with a thin line of a dark shade along the edge. While working, do not use aggressive thinners, which could damage the printing of the planking.

Who the deck is for

  • Builders of German battleships in 1:700 scale.
  • Modelers who want faithful wood texture without painting individual planks.
  • Those finishing a model for a display case who want the contrast of wood against gray paint.
  • Anyone interested in the particular state of the ship from May 1941.

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It refers to the state of the ship from the end of May 1941, which the target kit matches as well. The configuration of the superstructures and the equipment changed during her service, so the decks for different periods differ.

Yes, but insulate it first with a thin coat of matte varnish. Without it a thinned wash soaks into the wood and the surface darkens unevenly.

The pattern of the laying of the planks is printed on the wood, and no further painting is necessary. Only a protective varnish and perhaps a gentle picking out of the gaps are optional.
