About product

Artwox Model 1:700 Richelieu 1946 — a wooden deck

This is not a kit but an accessory to one. The set holds a thin wooden veneer cut to the shape of the deck areas of a French battleship in 1:700 scale. The laying of the planks is printed, gaps included, and the back is self-adhesive. The veneer is laid directly onto the plastic deck of the model and replaces its engraved relief with a material that has grain and depth of its own, something that cannot be reached with paint. The target kit is the Trumpeter 05751.

The real subject

The Richelieu was the lead ship of the last generation of French battleships. Her most striking structural feature is the concentration of the main armament into two quadruple turrets placed ahead of the superstructure, supplemented by three secondary turrets aft. The designation 1946 in the name refers to the postwar form of the ship after repairs and rearmament, when she had reworked anti-aircraft armament and modified fittings on the superstructures. That configuration differs noticeably from the wartime state of the early 1940s, which shows in the shape of the deck areas as well.

Gluing and painting tips

The most common mistake is working on a surface that has not been prepared. So first rid the deck of burrs, fill the seams, sand and degrease with alcohol. Try the veneer dry and note where it will be tightest. Take the film off the back in sections and press the part down from the center toward the edges with a soft cloth, not with a finger, as greasy prints show on wood later. Keep the painting restrained: the veneer already has a shade, so work with a thin glaze or stain rather than with opaque paint. A dark wash will suggest the gaps and the shadows along the superstructures, and a fine dry brush will explain the exposed places. A final matte varnish is advisable on wood, as it protects it against damp and wear while the model is handled.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of the French war fleet in 1:700 scale
  • Builders who want a faithful deck without painting in individual planks
  • Collectors of display models for which the view from above decides
  • Modelers with experience of fitting and precise cutting

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The postwar configuration differs from the wartime one mainly in the anti-aircraft armament and the fittings on the superstructures, which shows in the layout of the deck areas as well. The set matches the state given in the name.

It is not. The grain and the basic shade are already there. Use a stain or a glaze only if you want to shift the tone toward a warmer or grayer shade.

The most common cause is a greasy or dusty surface. The edge can be stuck down on the spot with a drop of super glue or thin PVA glue and pressed until it dries.

For the Trumpeter 05751 kit in 1:700 scale. The plastic parts of the base model are not included in the package.
