Wooden deck 1:700 for a model of the British light cruiser HMS Penelope (1940) is a self-adhesive veneer part with pre-printed plank laying that takes over from the engraved deck of the plastic kit. The target kit is Flyhawk FH1109S.

This is not a kit but an aftermarket accessory. A thin wooden veneer with pre-printed plank laying is mounted on a self-adhesive backing and goes straight onto the plastic deck of the kit it is cut for. The outline of the parts follows the shape of the deck, so nothing has to be traced or measured out.
An engraved plastic deck has its plank pattern set by the depth of the groove. However well it is painted, it stays optically flat and light reflects off it evenly. Veneer has the real grain of wood, which changes tone with the angle of view, and the print holds the width of the planks and the pitch of the seams evenly over the whole area. On a light cruiser in 1:700 scale the deck is narrow and heavily broken up, so the difference between a flat shade and a living texture is obvious at first glance.
Degrease the plastic deck first and free it of flash, or the veneer will not stick evenly. Lay the part on dry and check that it fits into all the openings. Peel the film off the adhesive layer in sections rather than all at once, or the veneer will grip before you can align it. Work from the middle out to the sides and press down with a soft eraser or a finger through a piece of paper. At the curve of the bow, lay the veneer in short sections and let it follow the edge. Trim the overhang with a fresh blade run close along the plastic. The shade can be fine-tuned with a stain or matte varnish and the seams between the planks brought out slightly with a thin wash.
The accessory is cut for the Flyhawk FH1109S kit; check before buying that you have the matching release. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
