A veneer deck is an aftermarket accessory, not a model. It replaces the visible face of the plastic deck with a thin wooden sheet carrying a printed plank pattern and a self-adhesive back. The cut-out is shaped to one particular kit of a British battleship in 1:700 scale. The set is meant for the Trumpeter 05796 kit, which has to be bought separately.
Most failures with veneer decks do not happen during gluing but before it. A plastic deck usually has molded hatches, winches, eyes and cable runs that will stand out as bumps under the thin veneer. Everything that is not to stay where the veneer goes should therefore be leveled carefully with a scalpel and sanded smooth with fine paper. Then degrease the deck with alcohol and let it dry out completely. Only on a dry, smooth and clean surface will the adhesive layer take hold evenly over the whole area.
HMS Valiant belonged to the British Queen Elizabeth class of battleships. In the second half of the 1930s she went through a major reconstruction that markedly changed the silhouette of her superstructures, the funnel and the anti-aircraft armament. Her appearance in 1939 is therefore the ship shortly after the rebuild, before the wartime additions of the following years.
Glue in a dry room; veneer reacts to moisture. Uncover the film over part of the area only, lay the piece on, check its position and press down only then. When you are done, even out the shade with a light matte varnish and darken any gaps between the segments with a fine line.
The set holds the wooden deck only. The ship model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
