The combined package contains a self-adhesive deck of wood veneer with the laying of the planks printed on it, a masking template and photo-etched parts. It is not a ship model, but an accessory to a plastic kit. The set is cut for the Fujimi 431314 kit in the late configuration of the ship, so please check the match before ordering.
The veneer comes in its natural shade and that is as a rule lighter and warmer than the deck looks on a real ship. The simplest route to a more realistic tone leads through a very weak stain applied in one or two coats. Proceed a little at a time and test it on an offcut from the edge of the sheet, because wood takes color unevenly and an overstained deck cannot be brought back. Anyone who wants a gentler intervention will reach for heavily thinned oil paint, which can be wiped off within a few minutes while only the tone and not grime is sitting there.
A stained veneer stays absorbent and is soiled by fingers, so seal it with a thin coat of matte clear. Spray lightly and in two goes, because a thick coat will fill the fine gaps between the planks and the effect will disappear. Only once the clear coat has dried does a wash into the gaps and any dry brushing of the edges come in turn. Fit the photo-etched parts onto the finished deck with super glue in a minimal amount so that no white stains are left on the wood.
