This kit from the Japanese maker Pit-Road in the 1:700 ship scale captures the Imperial Japanese Navy light cruiser Yubari in her 1944 configuration. She is one of the most interesting ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy of all, because she was built as an experimental project and her solutions then shaped a whole further generation of Japanese cruisers. Yubari was the only ship of her kind. She came about in the 1920s as an attempt to squeeze the armament and speed of much larger cruisers into a hull of a displacement closer to that of a large destroyer. For this the designer chose several unusual solutions, among them the distinctive curved funnel and the concentration of the guns on the centerline, which let the ship fire a full broadside. Practice showed the concept had its limits, but the experience from Yubari fed into the later Japanese heavy cruisers. The ship served throughout the war, went through a gradual strengthening of her anti-aircraft armament and was lost in April 1944 after being hit by a submarine torpedo. The year 1944 in the name therefore points to her late, anti-aircraft-reinforced form.
The distinctive curved funnel and the intricate superstructure are what sell a model of Yubari, so take your time assembling and aligning them. Cut the small parts away with a very sharp knife and sand the edges with fine abrasive paper. Spray the hull in a base gray, shade the deck areas and bring out the engraving with a dark wash. Bond the small anti-aircraft weapons and fine structures made from etched parts, if you buy them separately, with super glue. The model shows well on a stand and in a water scene alike.
