An aftermarket accessory to a ship kit, not a model. A veneer sheet with the printed grain of the planks and a self-adhesive back replaces the painted deck of a plastic model. The set is cut for the Aoshima 039083 kit; several deck sets relate to the same ship and differ from one another precisely in the target kit, so you have to choose according to the kit you are building.
The Yamashiro was a Japanese battleship of the Fuso class, completed still in the period of the First World War and later rebuilt several times. She is marked above all by the tall multi-level superstructure over the middle of the hull. It is precisely that busy superstructure that makes laying the deck interesting work, because the veneer has to go around a number of bases and passages.
The superstructures, the turrets and their bases are the main obstacle. Proceed by laying the part on dry first and marking with a pencil or a pin the points where it touches the projections. Cut the overlaps away with a new sharp knife in small steps, better to take off less and try again than to cut away too much. On the circular bases of the turrets guide the cut along the edge, not by eye. Only when the part sits without tension should you remove the backing film and stick it down. Keep the small offcuts, as they are useful for filling the narrow areas between the superstructures. The gaps left by trimming can be evened out with a weak dark wash.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model. The kit, glue, paints and varnish are not included in the package.
