About product

Japanese heavy cruiser Mikuma 1:700: Tamiya, Waterline Series

This injection-molded plastic kit captures the Imperial Japanese Navy heavy cruiser Mikuma in 1:700 scale. It belongs to the traditional Waterline Series, the family of ship models built without the lower part of the hull, so the finished model looks as though it were afloat and suits a diorama or a simple base alike. The finished model is 286.5 mm long and 36.5 mm wide. The hull is split into two halves for better rendering of the detail, and the main gun turrets can rotate once the model is finished thanks to polyamide pins. The model carries the ship's characteristic features: the intricate superstructure, the mainmast, the crane for the shipboard aircraft, the catapults, the secondary armament turrets and the triple torpedo tube mounts.

The real subject

Mikuma was the second unit of the Mogami class and entered service in August 1935. She originally carried five triple 155 mm turrets, but was later rearmed with twin 203 mm turrets, which formally made her a heavy cruiser. In the Second World War she served with the 7th Cruiser Division, took part in the landings in Malaya and in the Battle of Sunda Strait. The Battle of Midway in June 1942 proved fatal: after a collision with her sister ship Mogami she was hit by repeated strikes from American carrier aircraft and Mikuma sank northwest of Midway.

Building and painting tips

Ship models in 1:700 have a great many small parts, so it pays to work with thin cement for plastic applied with a needle or a fine brush and to build the superstructures in sections. Spray the hull and the decks with an airbrush: the base coat first, then the gray shade of the hull and a different tone for the deck areas. Decals go onto a gloss clear coat and are sealed with a flat coat. A fine dark wash brings out the deck recesses and the divisions of the superstructures. Add-on photo-etched parts raise the realism considerably, above all railings, ladders and radar antennas, and they are not included in the package.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Japanese warships and fans of the fighting in the Pacific
  • Modelers who want to build a fleet in a single 1:700 scale
  • More experienced beginners who can already handle small parts
  • Builders of dioramas with a water surface

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a range of ship models in 1:700 scale in which only the part of the hull above the waterline is built. The finished model looks as though it were afloat and slots easily into a diorama.

Rather for a more advanced beginner. The construction is logical, but the parts of the superstructures and the armament are very small in this scale and call for tweezers, a sharp knife and patience.

No. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and paints and glue are not included. Photo-etched railings and other accessories are bought separately.

Mikuma was completed with 155 mm guns, that is as a light cruiser. After being rearmed with 203 mm guns she was reclassified as a heavy cruiser.
