About product

The destroyer Akizuki in 1:700 scale, full-hull version

A plastic kit of the Japanese destroyer Akizuki from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. The model is offered as full hull, that is, with the hull including the underwater part, and is displayed on a base. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread for ship models; in it a destroyer comes out as a small model that goes well with larger ships in a collection. The particular contents of the package are not stated here.

The real subject

The Akizuki was the prototype of the class of destroyers of the same name, which the Imperial Japanese Navy built above all as an escort for aircraft carriers with the emphasis on anti-aircraft defense. The main armament consisted of 100 mm guns in twin turrets, which had a high muzzle velocity and a fast rate of fire, and that was a marked change against previous Japanese practice. Ships of the class were larger than ordinary Japanese destroyers and had a longer range. The Akizuki entered service in the middle of 1942, served in the fighting for the Solomon Islands and was sunk in the autumn of 1944 during the fighting off the Philippines.

Building and painting tips

On a small hull every uneven joint shows, so glue the halves of the hull on a flat support and sand the joint carefully once it has dried. The gun turrets, torpedo tubes and searchlights are very small; paint them while still on the sprue and glue them only at the end. Photo-etched railings make a fundamental difference on a destroyer, because the superstructures are low and clearly visible. Mask the waterline with tape and spray the underwater part separately.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of Japanese destroyers of the Second World War
  • modelers completing a fleet in 1:700 scale with escort ships
  • anyone interested in a full-hull version for a display case
  • patient builders who do not mind very small parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

She was designed mainly as an anti-aircraft escort for aircraft carriers. She carried 100 mm guns with a high muzzle velocity and was larger than ordinary Japanese destroyers.

A destroyer in 1:700 scale has fewer parts than the big ships, but the individual parts are small. For a careful beginner it is a manageable build.

The model has a complete hull including the underwater part and is displayed on a base, unlike a waterline version cut off at the waterline.

They are not. The kit is supplied unpainted and paints and glue are not usually part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
