About product

Wooden deck SMS Lützow 1916 in 1:700 scale

This item is not a ship kit but an aftermarket accessory for one. The package holds a veneer cut-out of the deck with pre-printed plank laying and a self-adhesive backing, which goes straight onto the plastic deck of the model. The shape of the cut-out is made for the one kit the set is meant for. The veneer is cut for the Flyhawk FH1301S kit.

Why veneer instead of sprayed plastic

A plastic deck has the planks suggested only by engraved grooves. Once paint and varnish go on, the grooves largely fill in and the area starts to look like one flat surface. Veneer brings real wood grain and printed seams that stay readable even after matting down. The sheet is thin enough not to raise the superstructures or change the height of the sides.

A note on the real subject

SMS Lützow was a German battlecruiser of the Derfflinger class, commissioned early in 1916. She fought at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916, where she took heavy hits in the forward part of the hull, and the next day she was scuttled by her own torpedo boats because she could no longer steam. Her 1916 appearance is therefore the only combat season the ship had.

Gluing tips

Sand the plastic first with very fine paper and degrease it, or the adhesive layer will not take hold reliably. Peel the backing film off in sections rather than all at once, and lay the veneer from the middle out to the edges so that no air pockets form underneath. Press down with a soft cloth or with a finger through paper, never with a hard tool. It is worth going over the finished deck with matte varnish, otherwise the veneer readily takes up moisture and in time starts to lift.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want a deck with real wood grain instead of sprayed plastic
  • Builders of 1:700 ships who are bothered by engraving that disappears under paint
  • Display models viewed from above, where the deck shows most
  • Anyone interested in the German fleet of the First World War

The set is an accessory, not a model. The ship kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. This is a separate accessory. The ship kit has to be bought on its own, and so do glue and paints.

The plank pattern is printed, so painting is not needed. We do recommend going over it with matte varnish to protect the veneer and match the sheen to its surroundings.

The cut-out is shaped for one particular kit. On a model from another maker it usually will not fit, because the deck outlines and the placing of the superstructures differ.
