An accessory set of injection-molded plastic parts, not a model of a ship. It contains single mounts of the American 127 mm gun with a barrel twenty-five calibers long in 1:700 scale, that is the weapon that ordinary kits deal with as a coarse and simplified casting. The set belongs to the range of fine ship accessories from the Japanese company FineMolds, which is renowned for thin-walled parts with sharply rendered detail. The decisive practical advantage over resin and photo-etched parts: the parts are injection-molded in plastic, so they are glued with ordinary cement for plastic, they are easy to fill and they call for no special handling.
The gun of 127 millimeter caliber with a barrel twenty-five calibers long was the anti-aircraft weapon of the US Navy in the interwar period and in the first years of the Second World War. The short, light barrel in an open mount allowed high elevation and quick aiming at aircraft, in exchange for less range against surface targets. It was carried by heavy and light cruisers, by battleships and by other vessels, until it was gradually replaced by dual-purpose guns with longer barrels. It is precisely the open mount with the crew around the barrel that is characteristic of this weapon, and in 1:700 scale it makes a striking silhouette on the deck.
The parts in 1:700 scale are tiny, so cut them off the sprue with a sharp knife or modeling nippers right at the gate, never by twisting. Work over a tray with a raised edge, because a lost part will not be found. Before gluing, check that you have completely removed the original weapon and its base from the deck. It is best to paint them while still on the sprue: a thin coat of primer from a spray can, then the gray shade that matches the camouflage scheme of the ship. Bring the detail out with a dark wash that runs into the recesses, and with light drybrushing along the edges. Finally unify the barrels with a darker metallic tone.
The set is supplied unpainted and without the base kit of the ship. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
