A kit of the large auxiliary floating dry dock USS ABSD-1 in 1:700 scale from the manufacturer Takom. It is not a model of a warship but of the support that served ships: the dock could be flooded, take a ship inside and surface again, so that work on the underwater part of the hull was possible even thousands of kilometers from a permanent shipyard. In a display case it makes an impressive basis for a whole scene, because it offers room for a model of a ship in the matching scale.
Sectional floating docks of this type were created during the Second World War for repairing ships at forward bases. The structure was assembled from individual sections joined into a single whole, which made it possible to move the dock in parts and put it together on site as needed. The side walls carried cranes and working platforms; once the tanks were flooded the dock submerged, the ship moved in and, after the water was pumped out, settled onto the keel blocks. These installations substantially shortened the time for which damaged ships had to head back to the rear areas.
The large flat surfaces of the dock call for careful preparation, so that no imperfections stand out once they are sprayed. Seat the parts dry and watch that the whole structure stays square, ideally building on a flat board. Bond the plastic with thin cement for polystyrene and let larger joints cure thoroughly. It pays to divide the painting up: a base coat, then edge highlighting and finally weathering, which on a working vessel can be stronger than on a warship, that is, traces of rust, streaking and wear on the running surfaces. The model goes very well into a diorama with a water surface and a model of a ship inside.
