A plastic kit of the American heavy cruiser USS Des Moines in 1:700 scale from the manufacturer Very Fire. This is a complete ship kit to be assembled and painted, not an accessory for another model. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread for ship models: the model takes up considerably less room in a display case than the 1:350 version and at the same time fits in well with a collection of other ships of the same size.
The USS Des Moines was the lead ship of the class of heavy cruisers of the same name, completed shortly after the Second World War. These were the largest gun heavy cruisers ever to enter service. The main armament consisted of 203 mm guns with automatic loading, which had a markedly higher rate of fire than the hand-loaded turrets of older cruisers; they were supplemented by dual-purpose 127 mm guns and anti-aircraft weapons. The ship also served as a flagship and was withdrawn from service at the beginning of the 1960s.
In 1:700 scale the parts are small, so work with a sharp scalpel, tweezers and cyanoacrylate glue applied in small doses. Paint the hull and the deck before you fit the superstructures and the gun turrets. At this scale it pays to replace the railings, ladders and fine antennas with photo-etched parts, as a plastic rendering is necessarily thicker than the real thing; the sets are sold separately. A finished model looks good on a base imitating the sea surface, which at the same time protects the fine parts from handling. Keep the weathering restrained; at a small scale it easily overpowers the shape of the ship.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
