Veneer flight deck for USS Yorktown CV-10 in 1:700 scale

The set is an aftermarket accessory for the plastic kit of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown CV-10, not a model. According to the name it holds a self-adhesive wooden deck with pre-printed plank laying, covering masks and photo-etched metal parts. On a carrier this is a fundamental visual change: the flight deck makes up most of the visible area of the finished model, and veneer on it looks different from the best-sprayed plastic.

A large area calls for a different procedure

On a long part a mistake in position cannot be put right by shifting it. Uncover the covering film in a narrow strip in the middle only, lay the part on and check that the edges of the veneer run parallel with the edges of the plastic deck along the whole length; only then uncover further toward the bow and the stern. Force the air out in a continuous stroke of a soft wooden stick, across from the axis to the sides, and never press down with your palm. A bubble pushed into the middle has no way out any more.

Surroundings and finishing

Veneer reacts to humidity. Glue in a dry room at ordinary room temperature, not just after a bath and not by an open window in winter, or the material will move slightly once dry and a wave will form at the edges. Fit the metal details from the etching last, so that they are not in the way while handling a large part. Seal the surface at the end with a thin coat of matte varnish.

Who a veneer deck makes sense for

• More experienced builders used to working with photo-etched parts
