About product

Stencils for spraying the camouflage of the A-37B Dragonfly in 1:72 scale

The set from the manufacturer SX-Art serves for masking the camouflage pattern while a model is sprayed. The stencils are applied to the surface and separate the individual color fields exactly, so that the resulting pattern matches the subject and is repeatable. It is not a kit, a decal or a set of masks for the cockpit glazing.

The real subject

The Cessna A-37 Dragonfly came about by converting the T-37 trainer into a light attack machine. It was powered by a pair of jet engines, had a strengthened structure, additional tanks on the wingtips and pylons for armament. The A-37B version was the most widespread and was used mainly for the support of ground troops and for counterinsurgency tasks. Besides American service it also served in a number of foreign air forces, where it appeared in broken-up camouflage schemes as well as in simpler finishes.

Usage tips

The basis is the order of the shades: first spray the lighter color, let it cure and only then apply the stencils for the darker fields. The broken-up pattern on the A-37B runs across the wings as well as the fuselage, so decide in advance which part you will do first and where you will overlap the stencils. You get a sharp edge by pressing the edge down firmly and spraying thinly, and a soft scattered edge by packing the stencil a fraction of a millimeter above the surface. Once the stencils are off, check the edge against the light; slight seepage is easy to repair with a brush while the paint is fresh.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building American attack equipment of the jet era
  • Those who want an exact and symmetrical camouflage pattern without drawing freehand
  • Airbrush users who prefer sprayed camouflage to a decal
  • Modelers who want to repeat the same pattern on several models in a series

The package contains stencils only. The model, the paints and the glue are not included, unless stated otherwise. The stencils are cut for a particular kit, and on another tooling the shapes need not match exactly.

FAQ

It masks the camouflage pattern during spraying. The stencils are applied to the model, a further shade is sprayed and once they are off a precisely bounded color field stays.

Lift the edge of the stencil slightly, for instance by packing it with a thin strip of paper. The paint then scatters mildly under the edge and the transition is softened, as it tends to be with real finishes.

It is recommended. You can also work with a brush, but thin even coats that do not creep under the edge are markedly harder to do with a brush.

No, the package contains stencils only. The paints, the thinner and the model itself are bought separately.
