The Macchi M.416 is a two-seat single-engined low-wing trainer that the Italian company Aeronautica Macchi built under license from the Dutch Fokker S.11 Instructor. Around 150 aircraft with a Lycoming piston engine were built at Varese in the 1950s. The Italian Air Force used them as the standard basic training machine until about 1960, when more modern types replaced them, and the retired aircraft then passed to Italian flying clubs. A number of machines have survived in civilian hands and fly to this day.
This is a classic plastic kit in 1:72 scale. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, the parts are on sprues and the build follows the usual sequence from the cockpit through closing the fuselage and the wing to the engine section and the landing gear.
Cut the parts off with a sharp blade a little way from the sprue and sand down the stub left by the gate. On a trainer the cockpit glazing is very visible, so polish the canopy, seat it without excess glue and mask it before spraying. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. Spray the bold colored bands that trainers often carry through a mask and only over a thoroughly dried base shade.
The kit suits collectors of trainers, of postwar Italian aviation and of Fokker S.11 derivatives. The box contains the kit; paints, glue and tools are not included, unless stated otherwise.
