This plastic kit from Special Hobby in 1:72 scale captures the Swedish Saab AJ-37 Viggen attack aircraft in one of the most striking finishes the type ever wore, an overall anniversary scheme named Show Must Go On. The box is therefore of interest even to modelers who otherwise do not collect the Cold War: the finished model is compelling in itself. The particular number of parts and of decal schemes is given on the package, so go by what is stated there.
The Saab 37 Viggen was a Swedish combat aircraft designed so that it could operate from short stretches of ordinary roads, and that is the key to its whole design. The double delta configuration, that is a main delta wing supplemented by a forward lifting wing with flaps, gave the aircraft high lift at low speeds. Power came from a Volvo RM8 turbofan engine, a licensed derivative of a civil type with an afterburner added and with a thrust reverser that shortened the landing roll. The AJ-37 designation belongs to the attack version made above all against ground and surface targets. The Viggen was moreover one of the first combat aircraft with onboard electronics built on integrated circuits.
A bold single-color scheme is unforgiving about the quality of the base: every seam left unsanded and every sanding mark will show under a saturated finish. Fill the joints, therefore, sand them with fine paper and polish the surface, and only then spray. Choose a light primer so that the saturated shade covers in thin coats and does not clog the engraving. Apply the extensive decals over a gloss varnish, one at a time and with plenty of water, so that you have time to position them; a decal softener will help them settle onto the curves. Keep the weathering on a display machine very restrained, because this aircraft was kept clean and an overdone wash would spoil the impression.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
