In a cabinet an animal works much like a human figure, only more discreetly. Placed at the edge of the composition it draws attention away from the boundary of the base and at the same time suggests that the world does not end at the last model. Several small figures placed off the axis of the scene read more naturally than one conspicuous figure in the middle. It also pays to watch where they are looking: when they all face the same way, the viewer immediately starts looking for what caught their attention.
Small castings are easiest to paint if you first stick them to a stick or a toothpick. Lay the base tone on heavily thinned and let it run into the recesses. Only then add the pattern of coat or feathers with a fine tip. Finally reach for a matte varnish, which unifies the surface and protects the paint during further work on the base.
You complete the scene around the animals from your own stock of material.
